The website Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache, or GfdS, is Germany’s most important government-sponsored language society. The word of the year is an annual publication by the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache. Each December, a German word or word group is named in a linguistic review of the year.
Linguistic maps have always been interesting for language learners. The website Atlas zur deutschen Alltagssprache can show you that the words Pfannkuchen, Eierkuchen and Omelette have the same meaning. They are just used in different regions in Germany. The different use of specific words all over Germany can be interesting and surprising at the same time.
