German Music – The Hits from the 80s – English Version
During the 1980s, a new genre of music took over Germany. It was a mixture of Punk and New Wave and sung in German, which lead to the genre’s name: Die Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) (the new German wave). Though during that time most of the artists remained One Hit Wonders, their songs stayed popular throughout the years. Apart from the NDW, the Rock and Pop genre expanded with artists like Marius Müller Westernhagen or Herbert Grönemeyer and the internationally most famous German rock band The Scorpions, whose most famous hits were released during that decade.
Also, the upcoming political unrest and the call for a reunited Germany found an echo in the musical work of artists like Udo Lindenberg, who was for a long time not allowed to give a concert in East Germany. His political engagement can be found in songs like “Wozu sind Kriege da?” (“Why do wars exist?”) or “Sonderzug nach Pankow” (“Special train to Pankow”).
